Montclair High Grads Head to Top Colleges

Montclair High Graduates Heading to Top-Ranking Colleges

Montclair High School

Last night Montclair graduated its Class of 2016!!  It was held outdoors in the amphitheatre and luck the weather held out!  The amphitheatre was full of excited, proud parents looking out onto a sea of Montclair blue caps and gowns.  This was an exciting ceremony with a surprise commencement speaker – Jeh Johnson the Director of Homeland Security and Montclair resident.  Mr Johnson asked that the graduates remember where they came from as they go out in the world and not to judge those who do not believe as they do but to try to enlighten them by example.  He also reminded them to keep in touch with their parents with full paragraphs and not just a text reading “How r u?”

Mr Johnson was followed by an equally impassioned speech by the Class President Jack Kyono to “Go out into the world and make it better”.  Looking out into the faces of the graduates was revealing, showing us who we are as a town and the strength we all derive from the strong diversity we live with and enjoy everyday.

As you can see from the attached article above, 20% of our graduates will be going to one of the Top 50 Ranked Univeristies/Colleges in the nation.  In a graduating class of over 450 that is an impressive number but more impressive is the high graduation rate and the low number of students who are not going on to higher education of some kind.

After the ceremony, graduates changed into comfy clothes and piled onto 10 buses for Project Graduation to a location unknown (later revealed  to be MetLife Stadium where they had the time of their lives).  The buses drove through town passing by many elementary and intermediate schools that these kids attended and the neighborhood piled out onto the sidewalks to cheer them on.  Police, ambulances and fire engines led the parade with lights and and horns and the graduates hung out of the windows cheering and waving at their neighbors and parents.  Nothing reminds you that you really are kind of living in a small town than a sight like that!

Montclair listing New York Times!

Bidding Wars in The Suburbs

A few weeks ago my partner Joyce Slous and I had a listing that was featured in an article in the New York Times!  It was a very interesting experience having the reporter and the photographer spend the day with me during the open house.  They spoke with many of the people who attended and we chatted about how the market works in this neck of the woods.  I thought the article was very good and it seems that the markets are similar in some other towns around the NYC area.

As mentioned in the article, this particular house ended up with 13 offers and the winning bid was 20% over asking.  Don’t let this scare you from trying if you are a buyer!  I have never had a client that didn’t find and win a house they loved!

It is a sellers market right now and a good time to take advantage if you are thinking about it!  I would be happy to help you get your house ready and price it appropriately!

Here is a Montclair Victorian that’s very charming!  It currently used as a single family home but can easily be converted to 2 family (it is zoned for 2 family).

It has lovely old world charm, built circa 1887, on a lovely desired block in Montclair and is walking distance to train, bus, and all the great things happening on Walnut Street (cafes, restaurants, bakeries, pub and farmers market to name a few).

Give me a call or come to the open house on Sunday 5/15 from 2-4 pm.

While you are in town enjoy the Presby Iris Gardens or the street cafes on Church Street.

Other features in the house include 5 bedroom, 2.5 bathrooms.  A newer kitchen, central air and a really lovely back yard with a patio that is right outside the kitchen.  This allow great light and views in the kitchen as well as easy access for entertaining which you are going to do a lot of!  There is a two car garage  and an extra parking space closer to the house.   The front porch is wrap around and the master bedroom upstairs has a balcony.

May in Montclair! It’s Plant Sale time

April 27th, 2016

If there is one we thing we really love in Montclair, it’s our gardens and trees!  May is a big month for plant sales, sponsered by some great local organizations and staffed by some of the most knowledgeable gardeners in the area. There will be amazing selections at all the sales unlike anything you will find in local greenhouses and box stores.  I have a new garden to work on, more on that later, so maybe I’ll see you there!

This Friday and Saturday, April 29th and 30th, the Master Gardeners of Essex County have their annual sale at the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens.  You can pick up perennials, trees, bushes and vegetables there and all the advice you need to keep them alive!

On Thursday – Saturday, May 5th – 7th, the Montclair Historical Society has their annual herb sale.  You can find all the herbs you can think of there and again, great advice! The Montclair Garden Club will also be selling flowers to raise money to beautify the town school gardens.

And finally on Friday – Thursday, May 6 – 12, the Van Vleck House and Gardens are having their annual plant sale.  This is an amazing sale in the beautiful gardens attended by very knowledgeable gardeners! Some incredible varieties!
